Educated in the North of England, Richard completed his studies at Sheffield Polytechnic before holding a number of key management positions in privately owned companies throughout the UK. After overseeing the conversion and opening of South Lodge for Exclusive Hotels he joined the entrepreneur James Gulliver, establishing Lords of the Manor as one of the leading country house hotels of its day. Having started his Management career at Great Fosters in the late 1970s, Richard re-joined this privately owned company in 1998 firstly as General Manager and then later as Managing Director. Before the sale of the hotel in 2018 to Alexander Hotels he spent twenty years overseeing the large scale expansion, development and restoration of this Grade One listed building, which culminated in the AA award for Hotel of the Year – England 2018/19. After leaving Great Fosters Richard established his own consultancy practice, specialising in complex restoration and development planning and helping companies achieve long term growth and profitability in the four and five star markets. He is also a Non-Executive Director of Beales Hotels.
